Key Takeaways
- Foundayo is a newly approved GLP-1 weight loss pill that can be taken any time of day, with or without food.
- Clinical trials show that Foundayo may lead to an average 12.4% weight loss on the highest dose.
- Foundayo may be more convenient than the Wegovy pill and easier to store than injectables.
Eli Lilly’s Foundayo (orforglipron) is a newly approved GLP-1 receptor agonist pill that can be taken at any time of day. It offers an alternative for people who dislike injectable medications.
This is the second GLP-1 pill approved for weight loss.1 Unlike the Wegovy pill, which was approved in December 2025, Foundayo can be taken with or without food, making it a more flexible option for some patients.2
Foundayo Is Easier for the Body to Absorb
While the Foundayo and Wegovy pills are both once-daily oral GLP-1 pills, they’re digested differently.
Foundayo is a small-molecule drug, while Wegovy’s pill contains a peptide (semaglutide). Peptides can easily break down in the stomach, which makes them harder for the body to absorb.3
“To get around that, the pill includes SNAC, an absorption enhancer that temporarily protects semaglutide and helps it cross the stomach lining. SNAC only works reliably if the stomach is basically empty,” Shiara Ortiz-Pujols, MD, MPH, director of obesity medicine at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital, told Verywell in an email.
Because of this, people taking the Wegovy pill must wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything, or taking other medications.4 Foundayo does not have these restrictions, since small-molecule drugs are more stable in the digestive tract and easier to absorb.
“Foundayo may be easier to stay on in real life because the routine is simpler. Many patients say the hardest part of the Wegovy pill is waiting before coffee, breakfast, or other medications every morning,” said Ortiz-Pujols.
However, both Foundayo and the Wegovy pill interact with certain medications, so make sure to review all of your prescriptions and supplements with a healthcare provider before starting a GLP-1 pill.
Is Foundayo or the Wegovy Pill More Effective?
Research shows that the Wegovy pill may lead to an average of 16.6% weight loss, while Foundayo can result in 12.4% weight loss.12
“On average, the Wegovy pill may lead to a slightly higher percentage of weight loss than Foundayo, so it may be a better choice for those looking to lose more weight, provided their lifestyle isn’t impacted by how the pill should be taken,” Wayne Ho, MD, an LA-based internal medicine and obesity specialist and a spokesperson for The Obesity Society, told Verywell in an email.
However, the injectables are often more effective and tend to have fewer severe drug interactions, Ho added.
People taking Zepbound (tirzepatide), Lilly’s injectable GLP-1 medication, experience an average weight loss of 15% to 21%. The Wegovy injection is associated with about 19% to 21% weight loss.56

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Foundayo?
Foundayo is an easier option for people who want the flexibility of taking a pill once per day, at any time. But it may not be right for people who need to lose a lot of weight.
“If you still have a lot of weight loss to achieve, and you’re doing well on your injections, especially Zepbound, let’s get you to your goal weight, and then maybe think about switching to an oral medication for maintenance,” Suki Singh, MD, a board-certified physician in obesity medicine and system medical director of weight management and obesity medicine clinics at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, told Verywell.
Unlike the injectables, you don’t have to store the pills in the refrigerator. This is another plus for people who want a medication that is easier to store and more discreet. However, Foundayo is light-sensitive, so you will need to keep it in the original bottle, away from direct light.7
How Much Does Foundayo Cost?
Foundayo might cost less than an injectable. LillyDirect, Eli Lilly’s direct-to-consumer platform, lists the lowest dose of Foundayo as starting at $149 per month and the lowest dose of Zepbound at $299 per month.89
Many insurance carriers don’t cover weight loss medications, but it is possible that, due to lower production and storage costs, some insurance companies may increase coverage and access to oral medications, Ortiz-Pujols said.
