So that\u2019s why they\u2019re replicating it in a lab to try to develop this ENV-308.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The phase 1 trial enrolled 88 healthy adults and evaluated ENV-308\u2019s safety and tolerability. The trial also measured the drug\u2019s <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/leptin-8683745\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impact on leptin<\/a>, a hormone that normally reduces food intake and increases energy expenditure. obesity medicine at UVA Health and&nbsp;associate professor of family medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> It\u2019s unclear whether ENV-308 will preserve muscle and prevent weight regain in humans, but these effects will be examined in the Phase 2 trial.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Enveda, the pharmaceutical company developing ENV-308, said<strong> <\/strong>the experimental drug could offer additional benefits, noting that adults who took it did not experience gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or vomiting, which are common side effects of GLP-1.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-sc-block-html\"> ENV-308 may help keep weight off after discontinuing GLP-1 treatment, but it won\u2019t likely have a comparable weight loss effect, says Lofton.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThe fact that you\u2019re getting Lac-Phe with ENV-308 could mean that we have better maintenance for weight that\u2019s been lost than we do right now, when we discontinued GLP-1,\u201d Lofton said.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She said that ENV-308 won\u2019t disrupt the GLP-1 industry and instead praised the idea of developing more than one medication for obesity. Various <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/7-fda-approved-drugs-for-weight-management-7568596\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weight loss drugs<\/a> are being clinically tested, including <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/retatrutide-weight-loss-11913706\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retatrutide<\/a>, which was recently found to help people lose an average of 28.3% of their body weight over a period of 80 weeks in a Phase 3 trial.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-7\" tabindex=\"0\">6<\/span><span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-9\" tabindex=\"0\">7<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cWe still have an obesity issue in America and around the world. ENV-308 is really interesting because it potentially addresses that in a different way.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-env-308-wouldnt-replace-the-benefits-of-exercise\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> ENV-308 Wouldn\u2019t Replace the Benefits of Exercise <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Despite ENV-308\u2019s potential to preserve lean mass and prevent weight regain, it would not replace the benefits of exercise, Varney said.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cExercise is necessary because it\u2019s good for your heart, lungs, circulation, sleep, and weight maintenance,\u201d she added. \u201cWhen these weight loss medications are studied, they are always studied in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.
