Factors that contribute to the development of colorectal cancer include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"14\"><\/span><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"10\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Genetics and family history<\/li>\n<li>Lifestyle factors, like diet or smoking<\/li>\n<li>Environmental influences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-the-more-symptoms-the-higher-the-risk\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> The More Symptoms, the Higher the Risk <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The number of colorectal cancer cases diagnosed in young people continues to rise even though cases overall have decreased.<span data-cite=\"2\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span> To help find out why, Fritz and colleagues looked for patterns in symptoms by analyzing health insurance data for more than 5,000 people with early-onset colorectal cancer (diagnosed under the age of 50), compared to people without a history of cancer or increased risk.<span data-cite=\"4\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The key findings:\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>People who had any of the four red-flag symptoms between three months and two years before diagnosis had a higher risk of colorectal cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly half of those studied had at least one of those symptoms in the three months before diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cWe hope patients and providers are aware of the four symptoms we found to be associated with early-onset colorectal cancer,\u201d Fritz said. \u201cSome patients in our study had symptoms for about two years before getting a diagnosis. Early detection is critical.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The researchers also found that the more symptoms a person had, the higher their risk of getting diagnosed with colorectal cancer was. For example:<span data-cite=\"4\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>One symptom nearly doubled a patient\u2019s risk of the disease.<\/li>\n<li>Two symptoms increased the risk by more than 3.5 times.<\/li>\n<li>Three or more raised the risk by more than 6.5 times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you have symptoms like rectal bleeding or ongoing diarrhea, you should talk to your provider about getting screened for colorectal cancer, regardless of your age, said <a href=\"https:\/\/surgery.wustl.edu\/people\/yin-cao\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yin Cao, ScD, MPH<\/a>, a senior investigator on the study and an associate professor of surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cColorectal cancer is not simply a disease affecting older people,\u201d Cao said. \u201cWe want younger adults to be aware of and act on these potentially very telling signs and symptoms.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-getting-the-right-diagnosis\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> Getting the Right Diagnosis <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Most of the early symptoms associated with colorectal cancer can also be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/ibs-vs-colon-cancer-12033832\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">signs of other common conditions<\/a>, such as:\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Ulcerative colitis<span data-cite=\"12\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/understand-the-differences-between-cd-and-uc-1943108\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Crohn\u2019s disease<\/a><span data-cite=\"11\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Food poisoning<\/li>\n<li>Viral gastroenteritis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThese symptoms are not specific for colon cancer. There is no specific symptom that\u2019s related to colon cancer because there are so many other conditions that can have similar symptoms,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/surgical-oncology\/ca\/santa-monica\/anton-bilchik-1609916733\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anton Bilchik, MD, PhD<\/a>, a surgical oncologist and division chair of general surgery at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, Bilchik said that all patients\u2014no matter their age\u2014should contact their healthcare provider right away if they are having symptoms to find out what\u2019s causing them. Even if it\u2019s another condition, like hemorrhoids, it may need treatment. Other GI cancers, like stomach and pancreatic cancer, can also occur at younger ages.<span data-cite=\"13\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-get-your-routine-colorectal-cancer-screening\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> Get Your Routine Colorectal Cancer Screening <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you don\u2019t have symptoms, Bilchik still recommends taking proactive measures like getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/new-colon-cancer-screening-guidance-stool-blood-tests-11985291\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">screened for colorectal cancer<\/a> when you\u2019re eligible. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the earlier treatment can start\u2014which may lead to better outcomes. Yet only 59% of those ages 45 and older are getting their recommended screenings.<span data-cite=\"9\" class=\"inline-citation-node\"><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"health-sc-block-callout--explainer_2-0\" class=\"comp health-sc-block-callout--explainer health-sc-block-callout-base mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block theme-explainer theme-explainer\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\">\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-heading_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block-callout-heading mntl-text-block\">Colon Cancer Screening Guidelines<\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block expert-content\">\n<p>The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends routine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/when-should-you-get-screened-for-colon-cancer-7370575\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">colorectal cancer screening<\/a> for most adults aged 45 to 75. Testing may need to be done earlier than age 45 if you\u2019re at higher risk or have symptoms. Adults between the ages of 76 to 85 also should talk to their healthcare provider about screening.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cYounger people need to be aware that colon cancer is no longer an older person\u2019s disease, and that it is going up exponentially among people under age 50,\u201d said Bilchik. \u201cThere\u2019s no excuse not to get screened.\u201d&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Different types of testing may be needed depending on your risk factors, so talk with your healthcare provider about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/colonoscopy-alternatives-5216758\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">colonoscopy and screening alternatives<\/a>, like stool-based tests.
