Monkeypox, on the other hand, is mostly spread through<strong> <\/strong>skin-to-skin contact with people who have open wounds, sores, and scabs from the infection.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In this outbreak, the modes of transmission may be more complex. In many of the recent cases, the symptoms present differently than in traditional monkeypox. This leaves health experts to question whether it\u2019s possible that someone can become infected even without direct exposure to an infected person or object. &nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt\u2019s still too soon for us to be certain that we know all of the ways that monkeypox can spread. What we do know is that most infections to date have been acquired through direct contact with people who are infected,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.columbia.edu\/people\/our-faculty\/wil2001\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W. Ian&nbsp;Lipkin, MD<\/a>, a professor of epidemiology&nbsp;and director at the Center for Infection and Immunity at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, told Verywell in an email.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Research on monkeypox transmission will be important to inform recommendations for minimizing exposure, such as using personal protective equipment, enhancing ventilation, and directing isolation measures.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-monkeypox-usually-spreads-through-close-contact\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> Monkeypox Usually Spreads Through Close Contact <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The primary way the virus spreads, according to the CDC, is through intimate skin contact, such as during sex, kissing, cuddling, or touching parts of the body with monkeypox sores.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"4\"><\/span> The virus is passed to healthy people through bodily fluids, lesions, and respiratory droplets of infected people or animals.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Unlike the COVID-19 virus, monkeypox can linger for a long time outside the body. This means it can infect people through exposure to contaminated items. This includes clothing, bedding, electronics, and sex toys.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Items can be disinfected with household cleaners that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/pdf\/Monkeypox-Interim-Guidance-for-Household-Disinfection-508.pdf\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specially marked<\/a> by the Environmental Protection Agency for their ability to neutralize pathogens, including the monkeypox virus.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In a study of four early monkeypox cases in Europe, researchers found evidence of the virus in the semen of each of the patients.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"><\/span> It is likely that someone could contract the virus if they\u2019re exposed to infected semen, though monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted infection.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThis is not equivalent to defining semen exposure as essential to transmission,\u201d Lipkin said. \u201cThere is risk in any contact with someone who is infected irrespective of whether that contact is skin-to-skin or occurs through an object like a sex toy.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> It\u2019s not likely that you\u2019ll be exposed to monkeypox in public, like when sitting next to someone on a train or while waiting in a doctor\u2019s office.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThe number of people who are infected is still low. Thus, the chances of becoming infected in a public setting are also low. Despite the name, several different mammals, including rodents and non-human primates can carry the virus. In the U.S., the first case in a 2003 monkeypox outbreak came from a prairie dog bite.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Scientists don\u2019t yet know which animal species the virus depends on for survival, though rodents are the most likely candidate.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"><\/span> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/veterinarian\/transmission.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC said<\/a> to treat all animals with caution and to practice good hygiene.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Humans can be exposed to the bite or scratch from an infected animal, eating or handling wild game, or using products made from an infected animal, the CDC said.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> There are no known cases of a human passing the virus to animals, though it may be possible. Disposing of waste like bandages and avoiding contact with pets when sick with monkeypox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/clinicians\/faq.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could minimize<\/a> transmission both to other humans and pets.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-can-masks-stop-the-spread-of-monkeypox\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> Can Masks Stop the Spread of Monkeypox? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Last week, the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220606212334\/https:\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/notices\/alert\/monkeypox\" class=\"pseudoStyle\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a> wearing a mask. But the agency soon removed the guidance from its website to avoid causing confusion, according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/07\/health\/monkeypox-masks-cdc.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/em> People who are infected with monkeypox and household contacts are still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/clinicians\/infection-control-home.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a> to wear a surgical mask.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/0509-monkeypox-transmission.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC said<\/a> that while it\u2019s possible that the virus can be spread through respiratory droplets, these will \u201cdrop out of the air quickly\u201d and aren\u2019t likely to cause infections.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_48-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_49-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, experts told the <em>New York Times<\/em> that it can be difficult to know whether infection happens through respiratory droplets or physical touch, and there hasn\u2019t been enough study of how effectively the virus is carried in small droplets, called aerosols.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_50-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_51-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Lipkin said he would encourage people to wear a mask if they feel more comfortable with it.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_52-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-lingering-questions\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_53-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> Lingering Questions <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_54-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Researchers are grappling with several questions about the current outbreak.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_55-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_56-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For instance, there is no evidence that monkeypox can be transmitted asymptomatically.
